CUBE is delighted to be launching DESIGNLab, a new space dedicated to the celebration of some of the most cutting edge designers around.

We are proud to be showcasing award winning cabinetmaker, craftsman and furniture artist John Galvin. Glasgow based John specialises in the application of traditional cabinet making methods to design unique pieces of bespoke furniture that intrigue and captivate. Having launched John Galvin Designs in 2008, the self funded business has gone from strength to strength in the past three years.

These innovative creations encompass contemporary design with quality craftsmanship. This marriage is of the upmost importance and is clearly evident in his production of beautiful bespoke pieces that will stand the test of time.

As part of DESIGNLab John will be exhibiting his Manolo Lounger chair which has just won the furniture section of the 2011 Trada Wood Awards.

The Wood Awards is the UK’s premier architecture and furniture competition celebrating excellence in design in the world’s most sustainable material. Now in its ninth year, the Wood Awards is the most respected award for building and design in wood.

All works in DESIGNLab will be available to purchase, prices available on request.

Manolo wins Trada award

We are very proud to announce that The Manolo Lounger has been honoured with The British Trada Wood Award for outstanding craftsmanship 2011.

The Wood Awards was launched forty years ago this year, in 1971 as the Carpenters’ Award. It is now Britain’s premier award for wood in buildings and furniture. The aim of the Wood Awards is to recognise, encourage and promote outstanding design, craftsmanship and installation in wood, the worlds most naturally sustainable material.

Designer's Block - London Design Week 2011

John will be displaying his work at this year's Designer's Block exhibition in London as part of London Design Week.

The exhibition runs from the 22nd to the 25th September at The Farmiloe Building, St John St EC1M 4AY.

John's space will showcase his new range of living room furniture and lighting. Throughout the week, John will be present to talk about his work.

Manolo Lounger Shortlisted for Trada Wood Awards

The winners will be announced on the 27th September at the Timber Expo exhibition in Coventry.

Wallpaper magazine Handmade issue 2 page feature

Purple Heart products featured in the August edition of Wallpaper magazine. This was a direct result of a collaboration between John Galvin Design and Nord Architects.

The collection was part of Wallpapers curation of craftsmen,manufactures and designers collaborating to create handmade pieces. The exhibition was shown at the Brioni HQ in Milan during the Salone in April.

Collect Exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery

John has been chosen to exhibit as one of the artists representing Craft Scotland at the Saatchi Gallery, London 6-9 May 2011.

Organised by the Crafts Council, this year’s event showcases 37 of the world’s finest galleries and the makers they represent. Re-launched at the Saatchi Gallery London in 2009, following five successful years at the V&A, the show is established as the place to view and buy the very best in contemporary craft.

John shall be launching his new chair, The Manolo Lounger, and light design at the exhibition.

Exhibiting at Milan Furniture Fair For Wallpaper Magazine

John Galvin Design and Nord Architects have been commission to exhibit at this year's Wallpaper Handmade exhibition at the Milan Furniture Fair, between the 13-18th April 2011.

Exhibited over four floors of the Brioni house in Milan during Salone del Mobile, Wallpaper* Handmade is an exhibition dedicated to the marriage of craftsmanship and design. Acting as patron, client and creative director, Wallpaper* has commissioned their favourite designers, artists, craftsmen, makers and manufacturers to create unique furniture, fittings, food stuffs, fashions and more.

Alain de Botton's Living Architecture

John Galvin Design was commission by Nord Architects to produce bedroom furniture for The Shingle House, part of the Living Architecture project.

The Shingle House is sited on one of the most unusual and poetic landscapes in England, on the shingle beach of Dungeness, near Romney Marsh. The vast beach contains a random collection of fisherman's huts (many of them owned by artists, including - most famously - the late film-maker Derek Jarman), two lighthouses and the terminus of a miniature coastal steam train. The entire beach is classified as a nature reserve and is filled with unusual flora and is a haven for a plethora of birdlife.

Living Architecture's house is by a young Scottish practice, NORD Architecture, who responded to the natural drama of the site with a simple monumental black house, finished in tarred black shingles on the outside and in a beautiful palette of concrete and timber within.

With only 275 bottles produced, the award-winning brand has worked with internationally renowned specialists in jewellery design and packaging to create a unique offering from the Orcadian distillery

The presentation box, hand-carved from sustainable Scottish oak by master craftsmen John Galvin and Conor Oliver of John Galvin Design who have over 25 years of experience, continues the nautical theme and just like the bottle, each has its individual characteristics and detailing.

John Galvin of John Galvin Design, said: "A marriage of contemporary bespoke design with quality craftsmanship has lead to the design of this outstanding presentation box and these beautiful bespoke pieces which will stand the test of time."

Each presentation box has free form carving and traditional craft technique is core to the construction ethos and the presentation incorporates no less than sixteen through dovetails.

John's Neopolitan sideboard is featured in the bi monthly January/February issue of 'Home Interior Scotland'.

"John Galvin is a name we'll be keeping an eye on in 2010. With each piece, the Glasgow-based designer
marries contemporary bespoke design with quality craftmanship. His new Neapolitan sideboard is a piece of functional art inspired by the pop art of Bridget Riley, and is built using American black walnut with layered solid wood laminations forming its doors."

D.I.G (Design in Glasgow) Exhibition at Che Camille

D.I.G is a design collective which John is part of along with fellow designers Joachim King and Thomas Deeprose. John shall be exibiting a number of his new furniture designs at this month-long exhibition which will be taking place at Che Camille, a design store for independent Scottish based designers.Along with their display of works there will be musical entertainment and a pop up bar sponsored by "The Famous Grouse" whisky company.The exhibition opens on Friday 6th of November from 6.30-10pm.

'Gandolfi Goes Pop' Exhibition

John along with a collective of local designers, will be exhibiting at Hutchison Hall as part of the one-off event, 'Gandolfi Goes Pop. The exhibition will run from noon to 1am each day to mark the launch of Cafe Gandolfi's 30th birthday celebrations, which will take place during the Merchant City Festival.' Running from the 24th-28th of September.
